About the FHDC Volunteer Program

Volunteers for the Flint Hills Discovery Center seek to support the mission and goals of the organization by providing assistance according to their strengths and interests in tandem with the needs of the museum. Our volunteer program offers specialized training for people interested in working throughout the Discovery Center.

Examples of recurring volunteer opportunities

  • Greeting visitors and maintaining the exhibit spaces
  • Leading groups, including school field trips and adult tours
  • Assisting with educational activities
  • Support for special events

Volunteers are integral to the success of the Flint Hills Discovery Center. Since we opened in 2012, More than 550 volunteers have logged nearly 40,000 hours! More than 350 volunteers have helped us with special events.

Volunteers come from a variety of educational backgrounds and life experiences, and all share a common appreciation of the tallgrass prairie, a willingness to learn, and the desire to support the FHDC in many ways.

Volunteering at the FHDC is a unique experience with opportunities to help in a variety of areas. To become a volunteer, you will apply and then meet with the volunteer coordinator. Once determined this is a good fit, the volunteer will be oriented with the history of the facility and a brief background of the content included in the museum, then given additional insight into the natural and cultural history and ecology of the tallgrass prairie.

Volunteers are provided opportunities throughout the year to expand their knowledge and get involved in a variety of ways. We also encourage our volunteers to use their strengths and interests to assist in helping us develop new content and help visitors in meaningful new experiences.

Our best volunteers continue to learn and grow, helping us as often as they can.
