  • Burn permits are obtained by calling Risk Reduction at 785-587-4506. There are strict regulations on burning in the city limits and procedures to be carried out when using burn permits.

  • Test your smoke alarms twice a year and change the batteries if needed. A good way to remember is to do this when you change your clocks for daylight savings time. Some alarms have a sealed 10-year battery that is not replaceable. Replace the alarm when the end-of-life signal sounds.

  • Call 9-1-1 to report carbon monoxide alarms. Leave the house until Manhattan Fire Department has checked for the presence of carbon monoxide and ensured the home is safe. Unlike smoke, carbon monoxide is both colorless and odorless, making it impossible to detect with the senses. Common sources of carbon monoxide include cars running in an attached garage, defective appliances, and defective appliance vents.

  • Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms emit a chirp every few minutes when the battery is low or the alarm needs replaced. If you hear a chirp, replace the battery. If the alarm still chirps, replace it with a new alarm.   • Manhattan Fire Department does not fill pools, nor does it have fire hose to loan out. You may contact City of Manhattan Customer Service at 785-587-2480 to inquire about renting a fire hydrant meter and the costs. We are unaware of any area businesses who rent fire hoses.

  • No. The City of Manhattan has an ordinance against setting on fire, within the city, any rubbish, trash, leaves, grass, paper, lumber, or any other combustible materials at any time. This prohibition does not apply to outdoor recreational fires and portable fireplaces complying with the City of Manhattan Outdoor Fire Policy at https://cityofmhk.com/DocumentCenter/View/23499/Outdoor-Fire-Policy?bidId=.
