Temporary Pedestrian Walkway Open During Hayes Drive Closure

City of Manhattan News Posted on May 02, 2026

A temporary pedestrian walkway is now open on Hayes Drive to provide safer access through the area during the current construction closure north of Levee Drive.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, a section of Hayes Drive was closed to allow for installation of a new sanitary sewer main. This work is being completed in coordination with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE).

During construction, pedestrians should use the designated temporary walkway and follow all posted signs. For safety reasons, the public is asked not to walk or bike through the active construction zone.

Hayes Drive remains closed to vehicle traffic in the work area while crews complete the sewer installation and rebuild the roadway section. The project is expected to take approximately 3 to 4 weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Drivers should follow the signed detour via Tuttle Creek Boulevard (US-24), Casement Road, and McCall Road to access Hayes Drive around the closure.

The City has received reports of people attempting to bypass the closure by driving through private property and across lawns. This behavior is unsafe, unlawful, and puts nearby pedestrians, business patrons, and construction workers at risk. RCPD has been notified.

Please drive safely, follow signage, and watch for construction workers in the area. We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as this work continues.
